Hello lovely readers.

Quick note on something that is really bothersome to me. I was so excited for the new cycle of boot camp which was to start next Monday. Now, I am faced with a dilemma. I cannot afford to be sick. All of the research I have done, including this:    Study on Working Out in the Cold Air . Did I mention when we work out on the pier the wind is already crucial? Not to mention we are working out in the early mornings. When I learned this morning that boot camp would continue to take place outside for at least the next 3 weeks, I was pissed to say the least.

Needless to say, I am debating whether or not I am going to join again for this session. It will be something I have to figure out and I'm not looking forward to that. Working out shouldn't be a debate. Therefore no matter what I will continue to work out, just maybe not at boot camp.

The bottom line is: I cannot afford to be sick. Can anyone these days? I already lead a full life, when I am sick, my life stops and I hate that.

Moving on...

I wanted to do something special for you all today so I'm going to give you all a few of my favorite things to eat while still being healthy!

1. I love salads as much as any vegetarian! The problem arises when it comes to dressing. I'm VERY very picky when I eat and Caesar is truly the only kind of salad dressing I like. I could make my own, but that is way too time consuming. I want to LIVE not live around eating. I found a GREAT brand! Cardini's!
They make both fat free and light caesar dressing! When I say it's good, I mean it's great!

2. While looking at websites for yummy recipes I realized most of them would be pretty bland (you can tell just by reading their comments!) If I'm going to take the time to cook, I want it to be a 5 star meal. While looking at comments along with recipes, I found a GREAT site that seemed to be the best of both worlds. It was called Gina's skinny taste. AMAZING recipes with helpful comments from people telling you what you can substitute in! For the first time ever I used spices I didn't know existed while cooking last night! I used this recipe of Gina's Gina's Chicken Enchiladas ! I'm not doing weight watchers (yet - seems easy enough so maybe as I get down lower!) But all of her recipes are weight watchers friendly. Each enchilada was only 3 points. Amazing!

3. If you hate regular skim milk but love chocolate milk and really would like to keep your protein up after working out (Remember that study I posted where I said people who drank skim milk after every work out lost more weight and gained more lean muscle than those who drank protein shakes?), why not try:
Farmland Dairies Skim Plus Chocolate Milk

It gives you 0 fat calories, only 160 regular calories! You can easily fit this into your calorie intake and it is MUCH lower than any protein shake when it comes to sugar etc. It also has 11grams of great protein! I myself purchased this last week and I love it! You can read more on the nutritional value here: Farmland Dairies Skim Plus Chocolate Milk w/ Omega 3 Nutritional Information, Big thank you to my girl Mel for recommending Farmland!
4. Thanksgiving is coming up and NO you do not have to give up everything you love! I am going to be trying a lot of recipes from Gina's Skinny Recipes but here is the Gina's Skinny Holiday Recipes page but she has thousands of other recipes as well! Just remember, if you want a piece of cake, do it in moderation!!

Well lovelies, I am off! Please let me know if you have any tips or if you've tried any of the above! I am going to try and get before and after pictures up sometime this week so be on the look out for them!

xo,
K

  1. Exercising outside when its cold is not the cause of being sick - you have to dress appropriately which is what the article you linked to said. This one says basically the same thing http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fitness/HQ01681 only it includes this statement " Experts say that almost everyone can exercise safely in the cold, including people with asthma and heart problems. If you have health concerns, get your doctor's OK." And as much as I might feel like it, it is not yet cold enough outside to worry about hypothermia.

That said - you have to do what you know what you will stick with. For me its boot camp even though it costs more than a gym, I know that getting up every morning and doing it that I'm done for the day and I get pushed harder than I do on my own. For me it works, whereas when I tried to be a night time exerciser, I would make excuses or get tired during the day and then be too reved up to sleep. My dad on the other hand who is a runner (I mean he literally celebrated his 50th birthday a few weeks ago by running a half marathon in 1:47) thinks that me getting up early to exercise is ridiculous. He sticks with his running routine.

Basically don't use the cold as an excuse - its hard I hate the cold too - trust me and my southerness on that one. But I know I'd rather do it with all my bootcamp peeps than try to do it by myself so I'll slap a few more layers on. I also think that Daris means the middle of the next session not the middle of November, but you might want to ask him before you decide one way or the other.

Ok, stepping off my soap box now. :) I'm glad you liked Gina's site. I've got just about every person I know who's trying to cook healthy using it.

  2. LOL! Love your soapbox Francesca =)

I should have mentioned in my blog that I get very bad chest pains (angina) when breathing cold air. So yes, it is very difficult for me to do it while also gasping for breath when running etc.

How awesome is your dad? I'm sort of jealous. That is amazing! I agree with you, the reason I fell in love w/ boot camp is obvz because of all of you and it helps to just go and get it done for the day, AND during the process I enjoy all of you SO much! That is what is making me extremely bummed.

Like you said, I have a lot to figure out. I may even try it for a week and see how it is. However, when I went that Monday night, in the cold sleeting rain...all I know is the next morning I woke up with pain EVERYWHERE.

Maybe it is just a matter of wearing clothing that will protect me better. Although I do not like the thought of piling on a ton of clothes!

ps. the cold isn't an excuse. I truly don't believe in them. If I get chest pains, I get them. If I wake up sick from it and my legs, hands, arms, entire body are stiff because of it, something is wrong. And the wind down on the pier does NOT help when I'm already running.

  3. I totally forgot to add, W's email said he would take it indoors "mid-november through April 2011".

  4. Oh now, cold and wet is a whole different story... :) That's why I actually have to blow dry my hair before I leave the house in the winter. :)

  5. It might make sense to do 3 days a week for the first few weeks of the next session (do the Lincoln Park days so you're not on the pier) and try something else. I just know for myself how easy it is to go backwards even with the best intentions. :) You're also welcome to try out pilates with me www.projectpilates.com and sometime soon Christina and I are going to Devotion Yoga because we have a groupon. Neither is as cardio but still options where you have a buddy until bootcamp is indoors.

  6. Francesca - I think that is a good idea. I don't want to miss out on the 250 deal either if I can help it!

I've been able to work out everyday this week by myself thus far, it's not the same but it works! =) I want to try out Yoga, maybe I'll have to join you guys for a class!
